Whether you’re lounging by the pool, laying on the beach or simply relaxing, there is no better way to do it than with a good book in your hand. Below is a list of suggestions, both oldies-but-goodies and some fresh off the press, for the perfect summer read.
“The Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks
Sparks wrote this book for Miley Cyrus and had it turned in to a movie. It was a hit at the theaters and the book is even better. Whether you’ve seen the movie or not, the well-told love story will put you in the mood for a summer romance.
“Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert
Although published back in 2006, this story has been made into a movie and will be released in August. Beat the theaters to it and make sure to read the inspiring story of a woman’s travels and adventures around the world.
“The Carrie Diaries” by Candace Bushnell
For all of you ‘Sex and the City’ fans, find out what Carrie Bradshaw was like before she was introduced to stilettos, Cosmopolitans and The Big Apple. The Carrie Diaries tells the story of Carrie in her high school years. Plus, what better book to read in preparation for the Sex and the City Movie sequel?
“Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” by Chelsea Handler
With her first two hilarious books hitting the New York Times Best Sellers List, her third book should be just as entertaining. Handler describes her chaotic life experiences with stories that will make you laugh out loud and not want to put the book down. Also make sure to pick up ‘Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea’ and ‘My Horizontal Life.’
“Heart of the Matter” by Emily Giffin
Giffin has written many novels, all telling the ironic tales of life and its obstacles. ‘Heart of the Matter,’ her fifth novel, tells the story of women who live in Boston who learn life lessons through an accident that changes their lives. Also be sure to check out ‘Love the One You’re With,’ ‘Baby Proof,’ ‘Something Borrowed,’ and ‘Something Blue’ all by Griffin.
“What Would Susie Say?” by Susie Essman
You might recognize Susie Essman from HBO’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,” but you may not have realized how good she is at giving advice. This book mixes her brilliant knowledge of love and life with comedy, making you laugh hard all while learning helpful lessons.
“I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell” by Tucker Max
This book may be a few years old and it has been made into a movie, but Tucker Max describes his life through hilarious stories detailing his encounters and experiences that you would never think possible. His stories will make you mad and make you sick, but most of all they will make you laugh until you cry.
“The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold
This chilling, yet touching novel tells the story of a young girls tragic death. Sebold starts off the novel very bluntly by saying, ‘My name is Salmon, like the fish, first name Suzie. I was 14-years-old when I was murdered.’ Even though she tells you the end at the beginning, this book is one you will find you cannot put down. The book was published in 2002, but just this year it was released into theatres across the country bringing the story of Suzie Salmon to life.
Summer is the time for you book lovers to catch up on some neglected reading during the hecktic school year. So what better way to start of the relaxing summer days than with one of these great summer reads.
