I knew I wanted to go to Mount Union College the first time I stepped onto campus. That was October 2005- the weekend before Halloween and the MUC vs BW football game. I’ll never forget that day. Once I got my acceptance letter that was it. I was so excited and I know I had definitely made the right decision. Every second I’ve spent here have been amazing. These last 4 years have been amazing. Although I’m sad to be leaving my home for the past few years, I know I’m leaving having made the most of my time here.
The shenanigans never seemed to cease and I’m so grateful for the lifelong friends I’ve made here that shared in those experiences. Starting with freshman year living on ‘Deuce Flo’ McMaster, we really lived that first year up. From decorating the hall during Christmas time complete with over 3000 lights, a cobblestone, snow-lined sidewalk and illegal hallway sleepovers to staying up all night watching Sex and the City and eating ramen. I want to apologize to anyone who may have been smacked by our ‘Ole Bamboo cane or hit with a water balloon made from condoms.
I had my doubts that sophomore year could be as fun as freshman year but I was wrong. This time around I had become a member in Alpha Delta Pi and conveniently most of the women living in my Shields 2nd floor hall were ADPis too. I only grew closer to my friends while making more. Living there was absolutely insane from the time I came home late and all the furniture from the lobby was in our hallway. I was confused at first, then found it convenient to enjoy my hallmates company comfortably in the hall, until we got eviction notices if we kept it there, to when on Halloween, dressed and ready to go out all my sorority sisters screamed our ADPi chants for the world to hear. Sorry Mount Union for disobeying your ‘no pets’ rule by having a cat live in our room- but she really provided some entertaining times. This was the year I first moved in with my best friend who still is my roomie and we still reminisce about our times together sophomore year, like drinking sparkling grape juice pretending it was champagne or having certain friends waking up in beds they did not fall asleep in with no recollection of how they got there. Thank you to my friends who threw me a surprise going away party before I left to study abroad in Spain. And although I absolutely loved living and traveling in Europe, I missed MUC every single day and demanded daily updates about life on campus.
Junior year did not disappoint in any way as I had moved off campus to an apartment. Again, many of my sorority sisters lived in my building so it was a constant great time. From hanging out at the townhouses where we had found a glass vase replica of the Eiffel Tower, which obviously had to be used as a drinking receptacle, to Greek Sing ’08 where The Little Mermaid should have won, but it’s fine. Certain parties that made us play a little game called ‘ding toss’ to our platinum chef competition where my team made fabulous chocolate and bacon cupcakes are some other great memories from junior year. But maybe the outstanding moment was when my roommate and I stole our Goose and he became a permanent resident in our apartment. Again, I think another apology is in order for anyone who may have been hit by our ‘flying’ goose.
I never thought I would make it to senior year, just because it always seemed so far away. I still feel like I’m only graduating high school, and a lot of the time I act like it too. Times like being locked out of our apartment with no pants on, the pregnancy pact, senior nights at Brendas (RIP), Jaliscos, and the Blue House, cookouts at Glam and making up excuses to not do something simply because “I’m a senior!”. I’m sad that this is the last class going through MUC that actually knew the Bier Haus and routinely went there every Thursday night for college i.d. night. Or those of us who enjoyed Mings before it became a lamer version of The Panda Garden and before we could go get Euro Gyro at 3 am. There was a time when Taco Bell had a walk through, a ritual that everyone must have been a part of in order to be a real student. These are things special to my senior class that I am going to miss so much.
Being a senior has truly been an honor, and I’m so proud to be part of the last graduating class of Mount Union College. This year has been phenomenal in every sense of the word. It is weird to be going to things for the last time; my last ADPi chapter meeting, last article for the Dynamo, last time in classes (undergrad at least). I’ve had some really fun times this year and I am so sad to see it end. My advice for underclassmen is this; have fun. If you think you’re going to make a fool of yourself doing something, do it- it provides a much better story and memory. If I had a dollar every time I made a fool of myself, I would probably be able to pay off my student loans now. You won’t remember an all nighter doing homework but you’ll never forget nights out with your friends. I’ll miss you Mount Union, but these last four years have done me well.

With less than two weeks until graduation, I reflect on the past four years of college and wish that I could go back and do it all again. I know that everyone says it goes by fast, but this time at Mount has gone by faster than I ever imagined possible. Make the most of the time you have here. It’s the only time in your life that you can be a stupid college kid. But, don’t be too stupid and always make your parents proud. Before I leave I would like to offer a few pieces of advice.
