2010 NFL Draft winners and losers

The draft is never an exact science, but this year brought new kinds of surprises.

The first eight picks went as expected with the Rams taking Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford with the first pick, but then the real fun began. The Bills used the 9th pick taking the top RB C.J. Spiller, while needing every position on the roster except running back. This shocked everyone including the Jacksonville Jaguars were banking on Spiller being their guy. The Jags panicked and reached for DT Tyson Alualu who was a major reach with the 10th pick. The Broncos’ also made an “interesting” move reaching for Florida QB Tim Tebow at pick 25, after trading for Browns’ QB Brady Quinn and having Kyle Orton on the roster. The move makes no sense short term, or maybe it tells what the Broncos think of Quinn in mini camps so far.

The biggest story was the free fall of QBs Jimmy Classen and Colt McCoy. Most people felt Claussen would go between picks 7-10, and he fell into the second round before being nabbed by the Carolina Panthers. The Browns wanted McCoy all along and had the patience to hold out to the third round before taking the Texas QB.

So after all is said and done, let’s look at the winners and losers

WINNERS

Seattle Seahawks – Seattle is clearly the biggest winner of draft weekend. Pete Carroll nailed his two first round picking adding Tackle Russell Okung to replace future hall-of-famer Walter Jones and Safety Earl Thomas should be a star. Seattle also stole Safety Kam Chanellors and TE Anthony McCoy in the late rounds. Carroll also made two trades adding RBs Leon Washington and reuniting with former USC star Lendale White.

Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens upgraded their offense through free agency so defense was the focus. Sergio Kindle is a perfect for the Ravens and their 3-4 scheme. 349 pound DT Terrence (Mount) Cody may be the next Shaun Rogers. WR David Reed was also a great find in the fifth round.

Kansas City Chiefs – Safety Eric Berry may be the best player in this draft. CB Javier Arenas is playmaker and OG Jon Asamoah may start and was a steal in the third round.

LOSERS

Cleveland Browns – Yeah McCoy in the third round had value, but there was a reason he fell. Haden is raw but talented. The second round really killed this draft, Montario Hardesty has huge knee issues and 5’10 Safety T.J. Ward is undersized and was a fourth rounder on most draft boards.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Talked about how they reached for Alualu, but they reached on each of there first four picks, most being project players.

Buffalo Bills – The Bills draft made no sense what so ever. Drafting RB C.J. Spiller was questionable, but not moving RB Marshawn Lynch after that pick was made makes it even worse. DT Torell Troup and DE Alex Carrington were very inconstant, but the biggest reason this draft was a bust is because the Bills did not address any needs such as OL or QB
