Never before has a coach been able to come into an organization and make such an impact. However, Rex Ryan of the New York Jets has been able to do just that.
The Jets are now a hard-nosed defensive team that lead the NFL in defense last year and look to be even better this year after bolstering the defense in the offseason. Ryan has been able to turn the Jets around and attract these star players to the organization because of his charisma and his tendency to be a bit of a loose cannon. He has formulated a plan for the Jets to be successful and has got his players to believe in the plan and execute it.
This was very visible last playoffs when Ryan had a playoff plan that had every detail down, even a super bowl parade. The Jets were almost able to execute that plan before just falling short of the super bowl. Ryan is a in your face coach who respects his players and will stand up for them no matter what as long as they respect him and give their best on every play. These attributes have given the Jets a certain swagger and turned them into a highly thought of team when it comes to super bowl contenders.
There are still questions about sophomore quarterback Mark Sanchez and if he can perform. Yes, the Jets went far with him last year but that was in spite of some bad performances by Sanchez. If he can prove to be consistent this year the Jets will be a scary good team because of their offseason moves.
This offseason the Jets have been making all the headlines. They acquired two former Chargers in LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie. Cromartie will pair with the best cornerback in the NFL Darrelle Revis to form the NFL’s best secondary.
The defensive backfield got even better over the draft, picking up Kyle Wilson from Bosie State. The Jets could not pass up the talent of Wilson who some NFL experts had going in the top 10 of the draft.
If the signing and drafting of defensive players were not enough to bolster the number one offense, the Jets also acquired defensive end Jason Taylor. Taylor, in his prime was one of the best but aging should not damper the impact he can have with the Jets. Tomlinson is also aging and a diminished role is something he is not used to but with offense relying heavily on the run LT will be given the opportunity to be productive once again.
The offseason move that will have the most impact is the trade to acquire former super bowl MVP Santonio Holmes. Holmes had some off field issues in Pittsburgh but the Jets were able to look past that because of his only fifth round pick price tag. This trade was basically giving Holmes, a tremendous talent, up for nothing.
The move got a lot of attention and had some crying foul. The controversial Chad Ochocinco tweeted to the Commissioner Roger Goodell, “Mr. Goodell the NY Jets are unfairly loading their team up with great players like the Yankees do, we need to stop this now!”
Rex Ryan is taking a lot of risk bringing in some players with questionable attitudes and other players having a diminished role. The Jest success will depend on of these players react to a new scenario but if anyone can get these players to follow a game plan and execute it, Ryan is the person to do it.
